What Can Saddam Teach Us About Democracy?
Paul Schmelzer from the Walker Art Center Magazine writes about On Democracy By Saddam Hussein. Schmelzer notes, "Paul Chan is fully aware how strange it might seem, in 2012, to publish a book on Saddam Hussein’s 1970s speeches about democracy. But as an artist and now publisher, Chan found the publication of On Democracy by Saddam Hussein “perversely pleasurable” and “profoundly confusing,” especially on the eve of a US election and as we put distance between our time and Hussein’s. But he’s not glib in the endeavor: the idea for the project was sparked by a late 2002 unsanctioned trip to Iraq with a peace group, one that has sparked art projects such as the film Baghdad In No Particular Order."
