Badlands Opens Retail Spot Y.oung P.ublisher 99¢ & Up
“Best Bet” — New York Magazine
Badlands Unlimited is pleased to announce the opening of our flagship retail outlet in the Lower East Side in Manhattan. A partnership between Badlands and long time LES business owners Mr. and Mrs. Yu, Y.oung P.ublisher 99¢ & Up is an one-of-a-kind retail experience conveniently located at 24 Rutgers Street, in the heart of the historic Lower East Side.
“A delightful new shop” — Artnet
Y.P. 99¢ & Up carries the latest books published by Badlands, including the bestseller Marcel Duchamp: The Afternoon Interviews, Poems by Yvonne Rainer, Think Like Clouds by Hans Ulrich Obrist, and the acclaimed erotic novella series New Lovers, as well as all the essential items a New Yorker needs, including toilet paper, vases, colorful plastic flowers, Woolite®, vanity mirrors, lottery tickets, and wigs—all at unbeatable prices. “Badlands publishes books that are as essential as toiletries,” said Micaela Durand, the director of Badlands. “Now New Yorkers have a great destination to find both.”
“All your essential needs” — Bedford and Bowery
Y.P. 99¢ & Up is approximately 800 square feet of retail space with a sidewalk entrance on Rutgers street. The main façade consists of a curated assemblage of mops, plastic planters, and a dazzling “lotto” light display inspired by the vibrant nature of the Lower East Side. The interior of the store is designed by Mr. and Mrs. Yu. One highlight is the series of mannequin heads displaying various hats and wigs that are installed on top of the shelf where the Badlands books are stocked. There is also a curious selection of insect repellents and school supplies on aisle one.
