Announcing Files 2.0
Badlands Unlimited is pleased to announce the release of Files 2.0, a line of artist works which first launched in October 2016 and available only on Badlands’s website. Included this time is a PowerPoint presentation composed entirely of images of iconic singer Grace Jones by Whitney Biennial 2017 artist Cauleen Smith, a PDF, Adobe Illustrator file, and Word docs by legendary provocateur Dread Scott, a TextEdit file of poetry by renowned painter and poet Etel Adnan, and a nearly 500-page unpublished PhD by the duo Dexter Sinister.
Badlands understands that today artists are first and foremost filemakers. Whatever the final form the work takes, artists make files that sketch, or outline, or plan the work in mind. Files are the work before the work. They are in fact works in their own right that illuminate the minds of some of the most compelling artists working today. As an essential element of the final work, the file is unique in how it manifests the “spirit” of what the work ends up becoming.
Each file in the Badlands collection is created by the artist and is saved as a document derived from the originating software that the artist used to create the file and subsequent work.
Historical distinctions between digital and physical art are dissolving rapidly. Approaches to collecting, preserving, and exhibiting works and artifacts central to contemporary art have not kept up with the changing nature of expression today. Badlands envisions Files as a new and novel way for enthusiasts, collectors, and institutions of contemporary art to support artists by collecting and preserving the files that enable their work to appear and thrive. Start (or continue!) your collection of artist files today.
